House of Popular Art Creation, Benedek Mansion from Gheorgheni, reopened on 27 June 2016

On 27 June 2016, in a festive setting, took place the inauguration of the Benedek Mansion from Gheorgheni. From this moment, the building hosts the House of Popular Art Creation.

Built in 1840, the building is one of the most representative wooden constructions in the area. Also, the mansion is listed as a historical monument since 1955.

We have laid down two basic principles: to keep everything that can be saved, so that old, authentic parts regain their former value, while all the other elements are to be restored using traditional techniques and materials”, said architect Köllő Miklós at the opening ceremony.

The most valuable parts of the monument are the street façade and the original decorative elements, unexpectedly discovered during the restoration works. The inscription – 1840 – can now be easily read on the frontispiece, as well as the ornamental elements.

The mansion will host exhibitions and events organized by Etnographia Gyergyoiensis Foundation, but also traditional sewing and embroidery workshops organized by the Harghita County Popular Art School.

The project „Conservation and revitalization of Benedek Mansion in Gheorgheni City” is financed through EEA Grants, Programme PA16/RO12.
