Roman walls discovered at Museikon

The Museikon project, implemented through EEA Grants – Programme PA16/RO12, aims at creating an icon museum in a heritage building which used to be a Military Hospital in the Habsburg period.

Archaeological research and excavations showed the building is much older, from the XVIth - XVIIth century and during the Habsburg period several structural changes underwent.

It was found that a small part of the fort defense Roman wall of XIIth Gemina Legion of Apulum was used to build the west side of late medieval building, which was later adopted by the Habsburgs. The Roman wall was preserved to a height of 3.80 m from the current treading level and over a length of 14.90 m.

Into the basement was identified a stone and brick Roman sewerage and the road the soldiers patrolled, via sagularis. Also, two brick sewers that were built in the XVIIth and XIXth century were unearthed.
