Press release regarding the closing of the project UNESCO fortified churches in Transylvania

The project “UNESCO fortified churches in Transylvania - a network for "defending" cultural heritage with open "gates" in order to facilitate access to it”, implemented by the Unitarian Church of Dârjiu in partnership with Civitas Foundation for Civil Society, was finalized on 30 April 2016.

The project aimed at establishing a network of cooperation between seven fortified churches in Transylvania, which are part of the World Heritage UNESCO (Câlnic, Prejmer, Viscri, Dârjiu, Saschiz, Biertan, Valea Viilor). The role of the network is to create conditions for "defending" cultural heritage values of Saxon and Hungarian ethnic minorities. Through implementing the “open gates” strategy access and promoting this heritage was facilitated.

“Defending” cultural heritage is materialized in restoration work of the murals inside the Church of Dârjiu and creation of an object collection related to folk art and traditional crafts.

“Open gates” are materialized in the creation of a pilot intercultural museum exhibition of this collection in the Church of Dârjiu.

The project was successfully finalized; more details on the project are available at www.1419.ro.
